Summary/Abstract: Andreas Karkavitsas (1865–1922) is not entirely unknown in the Czech context. The name of this Peloponnesian native has even appeared in two translated anthologies (*From the Struggles for the Fatherland’s Freedom*, *The Sea Is Our Destiny*). After graduating in medicine from the University of Athens, he took a job as a ship’s doctor on a merchant vessel. The authentic stories from the lives of sailors that he heard during his voyages inspired him to write a collection of seventeen short stories titled *Tales from the Bow* (1899). Naturalism also permeates his second most famous work, the novella *The Beggar* (serialized starting in 1896), in which he depicted the lives of professional beggars in the village of Kravara in northern Greece—a place notorious for its poverty.
