Summary/Abstract: Changes to the political map of Europe in the last century have resulted in a large number of Serbs living outside their homeland. In addition to Serbia itself, Serbs are a constituent people in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro—and, if Kosovo is considered an independent state, in Kosovo as well. As an indigenous population, they hold the status of a national minority in Croatia, Macedonia, Romania, and Hungary. Since February 2010, Serbs have also held national minority status in Slovakia, and they continue to seek similar recognition in Albania and Austria. Since the mid-20th century, Serbian emigrants have primarily headed to German-speaking countries, the USA, Canada, Sweden, and Slovenia; in these locations, the Serb population often vastly outnumbers the Serb communities in countries where they are officially recognized as a national minority.
