Summary/Abstract: This study aims to examine the transformation process of BMC (British Motor Corporation), founded in 1964, from an automotive factory into a strategic defense industry hub of Türkiye, alongside its mission of “localization.” Adopting a methodological framework based on the institution’s historical evolution, this article is structured chronologically to highlight critical turning points. The scope of the research covers the period beginning with the transfer of British and Swedish technologies since the plant’s establishment, the achievements in local content within commercial vehicles, the decisive shift toward the defense industry, and the production of mineresistant vehicles such as the “Kirpi.” Furthermore, it addresses the implementation of the Altay tank and national power pack (engine) projects despite international embargoes. The research analyzes the formation of a national identity within the defense industry against the backdrop of transitioning from an assembly-based industry to indigenous production. The article constructs its analysis using qualitative research techniques and a multidimensional dataset, drawing from the BMC Corporate Archive, contemporary newspapers, and strategic literature reviews. Oral history interviews with early-period employees who witnessed the factory’s founding and developmental stages further enrich these data. The findings are evaluated through an inductive method in light of technical, administrative, and economic indicators. In conclusion, starting with the revision of the BTR-60 in 1993, continuing with the “Walking Fortress” Kirpi and Fırtına howitzers in 2008, and reaching its pinnacle with the Altay tank, BMC’s indigenous and national military vehicle production has initiated a significant, pivotal shift in the Turkish defense industry.
