Summary/Abstract: The University of Lovanium/Leuven was founded in 1425 and has been closely associated with the Church since its inception. The old oval seal of the university bears the Latin inscription “Universitas Catholica Lovaniensis – Sedes Sapientiae” (Catholic University of Lovanium – Seat of Wisdom), with the figure of the Virgin Mary in the centre and the year 1425 below. It was canonically approved in 1834. In 1970, the French-speaking section separated from it, creating a parallel structure – the Catholic University of Louvain. In 2025, the university celebrated its 600th anniversary.
