Summary/Abstract: Contemporary Catholic religious education in schools is increasingly influenced by competency- -based educational reforms that emphasize learning outcomes and pupils’ holistic development. This article analyses the concept of religious competence as the central objective of school-based religious education, with reference to the educational reform introduced in Slovakia in 2023. Drawing on ecclesial documents and didactic theory, the study clarifies the distinction and complementarity between catechesis and religious education in school. Furthermore, it presents a structured model for the development of religious competence and outlines practical didactic steps for implementing a competence-oriented approach in religious education. The article argues that competence-oriented religious education strengthens the educational and ecclesial identity of the subject while enabling pupils to engage responsibly with faith, religion, and life in a pluralistic society.
