EARLY SPEECH THERAPY INTERVENTION AND PROFESSIONAL SUPPORT FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF PARENTS AND EXPERTS

Summary/Abstract: Early intervention is a key segment of support for children with speech and language difficulties, especially during the period of most intensive brain development. Given the importance of the first years of life for the overall development of a child, timely recognition of deviations from developmental norms and inclusion in an adequate early intervention program are important for the child and the family. The aim of this study was to examine the perceptions of parents and professionals regarding professional support in the process of early speech and language intervention. The study included a sample of 100 participants, comprising 60 parents of children with speech and language difficulties and 40 professionals working in the field. The study employed selected sections of the Sociodemographic Questionnaire for Parents and the Sociodemographic Questionnaire for Professionals, adapted from the Inventory of Quality in Early Intervention Centres (Romero-Galisteo et al., 2019). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the independent samples t-test. The results indicated that both groups of participants held positive perceptions of professional support in the process of early speech and language intervention. Although parents expressed slightly more positive perceptions than professionals, no statistically significant difference was found between the two groups. The findings highlight the importance of high-quality professional support and a collaborative partnership between parents and professionals as essential components of successful early speech and language intervention.
