Summary/Abstract: Post-Holocaust films characteristically focus less on persecution, deportation and the unimaginable horrors of concentration camps than on the lives of survivors and their descendants: the burden of rebuilding their lives, the lasting impact of trauma, the continuing struggle of the second and third generations with the legacy of the past, and society’s collective reckoning with the crimes committed. In the post-witness era, as the witness generation passes away, films increasingly turn to survivors’ inner struggles and the long-term effects of trauma across generations. Since the late twentieth century, and especially in the early twenty-first, collective memory has been shaped by persistent, unresolved psychological wounds, a cultural perspective also reflected in post-Holocaust cinema. Focusing primarily on Hungarian post-Holocaust feature films and documentaries, while also considering significant international works, the study examines how film renders the transgenerational impact of the Holocaust visible.
