Summary/Abstract: The study examines the relationship between collective memory and the genre of film in the portrayal of the Holocaust and the recent past in Hungary. The train of thoughts starts with the statement that the change in the representations of both time periods is rooted in the transformation of the collective memory of society. There exists, however, a major difference: Films on the Holocaust tend to put an increased emphasis on the distinction between past and present, while the latest works on the Hungarian recent past aim at an amplification of the sense of continuity created by collective remembrance. The author’s primary focus is on the filmic representations of time and space and on the commemorative figures that the films create.
