Summary/Abstract: Musical training plays a significant role in cognitive advancement by enhancing multiple cognitive domains and supporting academic achievement. Learning music strengthens attention, memory, and executive functions, as it requires sustained focus, working memory, inhibitory control, and cognitive flexibility. Active engagement in music has been shown to improve auditory processing, language skills, visuospatial abilities, and emotional regulation. These benefits are underpinned by neurophysiological mechanisms, including increased neuroplasticity, structural and functional brain changes, enhanced connectivity between neural networks, and modulation of brain oscillations and reward-related neurotransmitters. Early and intensive musical training, particularly during sensitive developmental periods, yields the most pronounced cognitive effects, though benefits can also extend into adulthood. Genetic factors, motivation, quality of instruction, and type of musical engagement further influence outcomes. Overall, evidence suggests that music education not only enhances musical competence but also supports broader cognitive development and learning, reinforcing its value as an integral component of education.
