Summary/Abstract: During the Holocaust, Jewish and Roma communities experienced the horrors of social and family crises, while the inhuman conditions of ghettos and concentration camps – hunger, overcrowding, terror, violence, and diseases – radically shaped their world. The connection between play and the Holocaust has rarely been foregrounded in academic discourse; my research nevertheless examines the layers of meaning of play under the extreme living conditions defined by ghettos and concentration camps. This study aims to investigate the role of play in a critical historical context as a manifestation of humanity, functioning as a tool for survival, maintaining social relationships, and fostering hope. Through the analysis of historical sources and survivors' memoirs, play patterns can be reconstructed that reflect a cultural framework of camp life and in which the community-forming role of resistance is also manifested. This research contributes to the expansion of interpretive frameworks in historiography – partly in the educational sciences – with particular regard to the examination of children's perspectives and the representation of traumatic experiences in play.
