Summary/Abstract: The study examines the operation of the Vajda Lajos Studio and the "three T's" (Prohibition, Toleration, Support) policy of the Kádár era in the cultural context of Szentendre during the 1970s and 1980s. The central research question is how Szentendre and its surroundings became an ideal venue for the arts, and how a radically innovative art group could emerge within the framework of socialist cultural policy. The author distinguishes two types of cultural mentality: official, state-organised and civil, spontaneous artistic activities. The analysis follows three main lines: (1) statesupported cultural events (Szentendre Summer, Temple Square Games), (2) pedagogical experiments (Come Play in Visegrád!), and (3) alternative artistic manifestations (Open-air Exhibitions, Nalaja happening, Vajda Lajos Studio). The research methodology is interdisciplinary: it relies on psychological (Ferenc Mérei, Donald Winnicott, Erik Erikson), historical (Pierre Nora), and cultural philosophical (Fredric Jameson) theoretical frameworks, using contemporary films, photographs, and memoirs as sources. The study highlights the role of play in identity formation, personality development, and community building, demonstrating how various cultural actors cooperated, influenced each other, and competed. The analysis reveals the significance of local values and traditions, as well as the dynamics by which actors at different points in the cultural field – artists, officials, cultural workers – mutually shape one another while continuously drawing on and renewing the intellectual-cultural heritage.
