CYBERTOYS: WHY SHOULD WE PAY ATTENTION TO THIS INCREASINGLY VALUED AREA OF THE PLAY WORLD?

Summary/Abstract: In the continuously evolving world of toys, the digital universe and artificial intelligence are beginning to enter the typical toys of early childhood (dolls, animal figures). This currently seems like a less significant change than the emergence and rise of computer and online gaming worlds; nevertheless, we have reason to go beyond how we have looked at them so far. They are no longer just new profit generators for the age-sensitive toy industry; they are an increasingly popular, newly designed, innovative product group for children, expanding the number and types of entertaining, enjoyable, lovable objects for children. They are also important "media" into which complex educational content has already begun to move, supporting the cognitive and/or mental development of their young owners, creating new knowledge and competencies (Z. Karvalics, 2018). However, we can also view them as starting points for a lifelong relationship, cooperation, and coexistence with the digital ecosystem, of which intelligent small toys are the first representatives —the "forerunners" establishing human-machine interaction.
