Summary/Abstract: The study is focused on the issue of ethnic and cultural diversity in the southern part of the Odessa region in Ukraine. The author argues that the region in question (Budzak), so far rather neglected in ethnographic studies, represents a special transition zone that has still kept a specific combination of cultural features typical for at least three supra-territorial domains of the European continent: the Balkans, Central Europe, and the Euro-Asian region. The present study is based on a twofold view: the synchronous view concentrates on the current relevance of the region’s ethnic and cultural diversity, and the diachronic view studies the significance of research on the region’s population for the development of modern European ethnology.
