Summary/Abstract: The first part of the study is devoted to the profession of journalism. It is a complex phenomenon, the clarification of which requires complex inter-disciplinary research. In this context we explore the differen ces among employment, vocation and profession; we have come to a conclusion that, unlike other professions, journalism is an open one requiring special professional preparation (education) and special prerequisites (knowledge, abilities, skills). The analysis of journalistic demography across several countries has shown some trends in the historical development of journalistic vocation and profession. It has underlined three issues: the increasing importance of specialized journalistic and media education, continuing feminization of the journalistic profession, and the role of some other demographic features. We have also paid quite a lot of attention to journalistic competences as they are described and characterized by normative, theoretical and empirical classifications. Journalists, if they are to meet all the requirements of their profession, should possess specific knowledge, abilities and skills. At the same time we have emphasized the point that these competences keep changing in line with media development and variations in the journalistic (and media) profession, and that a striking change into the competencies structure has been brought about by the Internet and on-line journalism.
