Summary/Abstract: In this article, I carry out a comparative analysis of the functions and uses of the conditional mood in Czech and Portuguese. I also examine its position within the verbal systems of both languages. Approaches to this particular grammar differ significantly between Brazil and Portugal; in this paper, I follow European Portuguese and its terminology. I proceed from the situation in which Czech is acquired (as a foreign or second language) by Portuguese speakers, and I focus mainly on the uses of the conditional mood that are typically presented from A1 to B1-level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: the conditional in simple sentences; the conditional in subordinate clauses introduced by the conjunction kdyby; and certain subordinate clauses introduced by aby. I additionally include further uses of the conditional mood in Portuguese that are not found in Czech, as well as cases of possible substitution by the imperfect and the pluperfect. Based on the results of the analysis, I define the conditional mood as a grammatical phenomenon that is non-parallel for the two languages.
