Summary/Abstract: The study tries to explain the transformation of literary-historical approaches, which occurred in connection with the conclusions of the World War I and the formation of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (Yugoslavia). The basic paradigm of integration processes has been developed in the South Slavic nations since the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, but the situation after 1918 has determined new forms of these efforts. In the context of political relations and the idea of a new state structure, however, the interpretative models of literary history have changed, in which three basic concepts can be discussed. In the first, pre-war phase, South Slavic literary history was perceived by Serbian historians as part of the corpus of Serbian literature (Stojan Novaković). The second possible approach is certain Serbo-Croatian dualism (Gerhard Gesemann, Dragutin Prohaska). The third methodology is the concept of Yugoslav literature, whose main representative was Pavel Popović. The analysis of his literary-historical works, especially the Outline of Serbian Literature (Pregled srpske književnosti), Yugoslav Literature (Jugoslovenska književnost), Yugoslav Literature as a Whole (Jugoslovenska književnost kao celina), and the View of Yugoslav Literature (Ogled o jugoslovenskoj književnosti), helps to follow the transformations of the reflections on the unified Yugoslav literature, its specifics in the interwar period and last but not least the circumstances that led to its failure.
