Summary/Abstract: This article proposes a phonetic principle for arranging the letters of an alphabet: letters are grouped by phonetic feature, the vowels first and the consonants after them, ordered by sonority and manner of articulation. The aim is not to replace the traditional order of the national alphabets, but to offer an alternative instrument of comparison, useful for newly constructed languages, for linguistic description, for the design of alphabets and for teaching. A phonetic arrangement makes alphabets easier to compare across writing systems such as the Latin script, Cyrillic, the Greek alphabet, Glagolitic and the syllabaries, and it brings similar sounds and related word forms closer together in alphabetical order.
