Summary/Abstract: The paper explores the shift occurring in theory and practice regarding the reference points that serve as the foundation for promoting knowledge and education in school, for the relationship between school and important social issues that individuals face, and for involving students in the curriculum design process. This qualitative research paper emphasizes the importance of establishing a new reference for curriculum design that includes the individual and social context where students are facing a series of challenges that cannot be addressed without the knowledge learned in school. The analysis presented in this paper shows that traditional knowledge accumulation cannot be done only for a future time or context but must be transformed into empower students to deal with all the challenges they face outside school.
