Summary/Abstract: This study examines the concept of ḥērem in Joshua 6, focusing on its semantic range and theological significance within the narrative of Jericho’s fall. Ḥērem may be understood as an act of destruction, but also as total consecration to YHWH. This consecration is realized either through annihilation or by integration into the realm of the sacred. The narrative thus brings to the forefront the primacy of divine action and the necessity of human obedience to God’s will. However, the figure of Rahab sheds new light on the relationship between judgment and salvation, revealing a deeper dimension of the narrative. Through her deliverance, it is revealed that divine judgment responds to the faith of the people. By hearing about God’s mighty acts, she confesses, being received into His people. Therefore, the presented study considers that faith, and not the origin, is what makes an individual belong to the community of God. Ḥērem is, therefore, an instrument of judgment through which God's saving work is manifested and prepared.
