Summary/Abstract: The article traces the evolution of the concept of cultural heritage in Romania, from the Oriental custom of periodic reconstruction to the Western approach of preservation that emerged in the 19th century. Drawing on historical examples—including the restoration of the Curtea de Argeș complex and the demolitions and preservation efforts undertaken during the communist period—the author highlights the current crisis in the field. The vulnerability of cultural heritage is compounded by underfunding and by insufficient education among those responsible for its administration.
