Summary/Abstract: Adrian Mureșan examines Romanian literary criticism after 2000, challenging Nicolae Manolescu’s thesis that the new generation of scholars has experienced a decline in critical ability. The article argues that Romania’s critical heritage has continued to expand, adding new layers of interpretation—whether revisionist or recuperative—to the reception of canonical writers. At the same time, the author identifies several structural shortcomings of the contemporary literary environment: the indiscriminate mixing of literary values, ideological distortions, the weak presence of literary theory, and forms of censorship fostered by the entrenched institutional patterns of the Romanian Writers’ Union. Surveying the scholarly output of 2010–2011, he highlights several major directions of research, including postwar literature, memory politics, and the “posturality” of authors. The article concludes with an analysis of two outstanding studies: Anca Hațiegan’s volume on theatricality and the novel under communism, and Bianca Burța-Cernat’s acclaimed synthesis of interwar women’s fiction, which recovers a neglected literary tradition while dismantling the misogynistic prejudices of the period and later ideological distortions.
