Summary/Abstract: The preservation of human culture is an age-old act of both individual and collective memory, regardless of the forms this preservation has taken over the millennia: pictographs on cave walls, inscriptions on clay, stone, wooden, or wax tablets, papyrus scrolls, codices, paper, parchment, and more. Access to this vast and ever-changing archive of human culture has always depended on another fundamental human activity—reading—which has undergone three major revolutions, each separated from the next by centuries. Beyond the advantages and disadvantages of digitally storing texts and knowledge, the transition from sequential reading (of printed texts on paper) to simultaneous reading (of digital texts on screens) has transformed both the reception of content and the ways in which it is processed. While it is still too early to reach a definitive judgment on the benefits or drawbacks of the large-scale shift from the printed, linear text to the multidirectional digital text, the author argues that certain realities have already become evident on both sides of the debate.
