Summary/Abstract: Sever Voinescu argues that preserving culture is not merely a matter of digitally storing information on servers, but rather a living process of transmission. He identifies a contemporary paradox: although access to information is easier than ever before, genuine transmission has been blocked, giving rise to a profound crisis of content in an educational system increasingly shaped by utilitarianism. He further observes that the tendency to label virtually every phenomenon and conflict as “cultural” has gradually emptied the term of its distinctive meaning. To explain the dynamics of cultural transmission, the author draws on two classical points of reference. The first is Cicero’s agricultural metaphor, according to which culture consists in cultivating the human mind (the soil) so that it may bear the fruit of worthwhile ideas (the seed), a process requiring sustained effort and patience. The second is the story of Monk Libertinus, who restores a dead child to life by means of his mentor’s sandal. This episode symbolizes the reverence with which each new generation should put its inherited legacy to work.
