Summary/Abstract: The article distinguishes between the concepts of linguistic “heritage” and linguistic “tradition”. Heritage is an inherent endowment (such as the Latin foundation of the Romanian language), whereas tradition is a subjective construct that is actively and consciously appropriated within a cultural context. Tradition plays an essential role in the standardization of language, validating certain forms based on their prestige rather than on strict etymological principles, as illustrated by Romanian expressions such as ora două (“two o’clock”) and clasa întâi (“first class”). The appropriation of certain traditions may generate ruptures and controversies, exemplified by the historical tension between Latinist purists and defenders of popular usage, as well as by debates over orthography. Nevertheless, the Romanian language and culture also reflect a paradoxical “tradition of innovation”, which shows creativity and absence of rigid conservatism.
