Three Moments of Dialogue between Generations

Summary/Abstract: In this article, Ion Pop examines young people’s attitude towards cultural heritage by following three major stages of the history of postwar Romanian poetry. The generation of the 1960s (Neo-Modernists) rejected the ideologically imposed Proletkult propaganda and recovered the tradition of interwar modernism, restoring the centrality of aesthetic values, reflexive imagination, and the depth of inwardness. The generation of the 1980s contested the aestheticism of their predecessors, bringing poetry down to the raw reality of daily life. Their postmodern program bet on authenticity, incorporation of colloquial language, irony, and intertextuality. By contrast, the generation that emerged in the 2000s is characterized by a more spontaneous approach, often veering toward the visceral and the vulgar. The author criticizes the excessive use of “Romglish”, the tech jargon, and the growing detachment from humanistic culture, viewing them as signs of diminishing interest in major cultural heritage. Although generational dynamics are naturally polemical, literary criticism should remain focused on aesthetic judgement, while resisting the pressure of new ideological trends.
