Summary/Abstract: Cultural and symbolic heritage is an active process that requires selection, appropriation, and transmission, rather than being merely a passive inheritance. At the heart of the author’s argument is a defense of the mother tongue, regarded as the most powerful marker of identity. The article warns of the serious danger that “small” national languages and reflexive literary language may be overwhelmed by the hegemony of global English (Globish) and by the prevailing pragmatism of contemporary communication, with the risk of gradual dissolution over time. Authentic cosmopolitanism does not require uprooting oneself or abandoning one’s “place” of identity. A living heritage harmoniously integrates its native values along with external influences without losing its distinctive character.
