Heritage, Cultural Generation, and Self-Understanding

Summary/Abstract: In this article, the author argues that we constantly live within the horizon of traditions—such as the language we speak—which are essential for recognizing who we are. Compared to the contemporary man, often trapped by self-idolatry and the obsessive cultivation of a superficial image on social media, genuine self-understanding requires a reflexive act through which we discover that we simultaneously bear within ourselves both a personal identity and a collective memory. The authentic appropriation of a heritage calls for the paradoxical ability to distance oneself from both oneself and the past. This process of re-evaluation takes place in a distinctive way within each cultural generation. Illustrating this dynamic of change, the author observes that the young generation educated immediately after 1990 enthusiastically rediscovered the landmarks of interwar philosophy, whereas subsequent generations have approached tradition in a more pragmatic, analytical, and relaxed manner. Ultimately, the article concludes that a heritage remains alive only insofar as it is freely rediscovered and personally assumed through the continuous effort of cultivating the self.
