Summary/Abstract: Aim of the work: The authors addressed the issue of the importance of sheep farming as a socio-economic phenomenon in the context of multifunctional agriculture and rural development. The aim of the study was to present sheep farming as a productive activity and an element of culture, local identity and a source of public goods and ecosystem services. Research method: The study uses a conceptual and analytical approach, with a critical analysis of the literature on the subject and available source materials. Key results: The analysis concluded that sheep farming activity fits into the model of sustainable development due to its relatively low intensity, ability to maintain the cultural landscape, and social and environmental functions. In Poland in particular, sheep farming has regional and symbolic significance, and its development depends on agricultural policy instruments and changing social expectations. Main conclusions: The results obtained indicate the need to interpret sheep farming in terms of public goods and the multifunctionality of agriculture, rather than solely in terms of economic efficiency.
