Religious Perception of Illness and Suffering in Patients with acute Myocardial Infarction: Interpretations of the Data of a Study from a Tertiary Cardiology Center in the Region of Moldova

Summary/Abstract: Introduction: The study investigates religious perceptions related to illness and suffering in patients with acute myocardial infarction admitted to a tertiary cardiology center in Moldova. Materials and methods: A specific questionnaire was applied to assess the religious attitudes and practices of patients hospitalized and treated by percutaneous coronary angioplasty.Results: Most patients (67%) identify themselves as religious, and 53% turn to both the doctor and the priest in situations of illness. 41% consider illness to be a consequence of sins, while 44% see it as a divine trial. Prayer is considered effective by 68% of participants, and 56% say they would know of cases of miraculous healings. Conclusions: Religious perceptions profoundly influence the way patients approach suffering and illness, and religiosity plays animportant role in complementing medical treatment.
