Summary/Abstract: In a world of “cultural negativism” and “spirit of caricature”, criticizing the culture of materialism and of the body, Nichifor Crainic advocates theological origins of art. Art is originated in religion, and at its highest manifestation is religious worshiping. The work of art in itself expresses nostalgia for paradise, the longing of creation for its Creator, the desire for fulfi lment in a higher order. In his aesthetic system, inspired by the writings of Pseudo-Denys, God is Beauty itself or pure Beauty, sharing to the world, by descent, refl ections of His beauty. The show of the world, in turn, is a mirror refl ection of transcendent Beauty, aiming “participation in God”. The top of this participation is the Christian saint, whose the ethical and spiritual aesthetics intertwine.
