Summary/Abstract: SCr. tòrnjati se ‘get lost, off you go’ is usually derived from Ven. tornar(se) ‘return’ < Vulg. L tornāre ‘turn; return’. However, the geographical distribution of the attested forms (Nišava, Raška, Podrinje, Banat, Bačka, Slavonia, Lika, Tropolje, Herzegovina, Ravni Kotari, Dalmatian Zagora, etc.) does not point to Venetian as the source of borrowing. The paper therefore proposes an alternative etymology, deriving SCr. tòrnjati se from Romn. 2sg. subj. să te torni [tornj ] ‘may you return, return!’, likewise from Vulg. L tornāre.
