Summary/Abstract: This paper presents an analytical study of secondary school textbooks called Čitanke. The research focuses on textbooks for the Bosnian and Serbian language and literature courses. These textbooks are expected to provide optimal solutions in educational design while meeting general quality standards, particularly in presenting literary works as textbook content. Textbooks include literary texts prescribed by the secondary school curriculum and contribute to the successful achievement of the goals and objectives of literature teaching. The focus of the analysis was on the scholarly, professional, and educational values of the textbooks, as well as on their didactic and methodological aspects. In addition to the selected literary texts, textbooks necessarily contain a didactic and methodological apparatus intended for both teachers and students, including various questions, tasks, and assignments, biographical information about authors, explanations of literary terms, and guidelines for independent work and classroom activities. The aim of the study was to highlight the importance of these kinds of textbooks, their similarities and differences, inconsistencies, page volume, and content structure. Based on the obtained results, the hypothesis that the texts included in these textbooks are appropriate for the students’ age was confirmed. The style is appealing to students, simple, and comprehensible. By presenting the results of this research on secondary school textbooks, the paper seeks to make a modest contribution to mother tongue and literature teaching, drawing attention to existing shortcomings and inconsistencies in the creation of these highly significant textbooks. An analysis of the content of the examined textbooks revealed that their authors did not consistently adhere to the prescribed curriculum, and that the didactic and methodological apparatus could have been of higher quality.
