THE CONSTITUTIONAL AND LEGAL STATUS OF THE BOSNIAN LANGUAGE – CHALLENGES, OPPORTUNITIES, AND PERSPECTIVES IN MONTENEGRO

Summary/Abstract: This paper examines the constitutional and legal status of the Bosnian language in Montenegro, providing an overview of the linguistic situation in both the past and the present and, within that context, the position, role, and significance of the Bosnian language. Alongside a historical review, the current state of the educational system is presented. Special attention is given to the position of Bosniaks and their national, cultural, and linguistic identity in Montenegro. The constitutional and legal status of the Bosnian language is explained, as well as the status of languages of other national communities that belong to a shared linguistic system. The paper also addresses the institutional treatment of the Bosnian language, its use and study, and the presentation of the linguistic heritage of Bosniaks in Montenegro through the educational system. Finally, the paper offers basic guidelines and recommendations aimed at improving the status of the Bosnian language within the educational system, strengthening its institutional foundation, promoting the valorization of linguistic heritage, and, overall, preserving the linguistic identity of Bosniaks in Montenegro.
