Summary/Abstract: The article examines the symbolic function of the female character in Ovidiu Dunăreanu’s excerpt “Fugara dintre ape” (“She Who Fled Across the Waters”), focusing on the manner in which the figure of the bride constructs an imaginary nucleus situated at the intersection of historical trauma, liminal space, and identity regeneration. The study is grounded in the hypothesis that Dumitra transcends the status of a mere narrative character and becomes a symbolic structure through which the text problematizes the relationship between the violence of history and the spiritual survival of Danubian communities. The analysis employs instruments drawn from thematic criticism, the anthropology of the imaginary, and symbolic hermeneutics in order to highlight the relationship between water, frontier, femininity, and ritual. The crossing of the Danube, the violent disruption of the wedding ceremony, and the refuge within the isolated space of the sheepfold are interpreted as stages of an initiatory process that transforms the character from a historical victim into a figure of rebirth and cultural continuity.
