Advancing Causal Insights in Micro-CSR: A Systematic Review of Experimental Research

Summary/Abstract: This study addresses the methodological gap in micro-corporate social responsibility (micro-CSR) research by conducting a systematic literature review focused on experimental methodologies. The examination critically assesses the existing research, identifies pivotal trajectories, and offers practical guidelines for future experimental studies in this field. Adhering to the PRISMA guidelines, we reviewed peer-reviewed articles published in the Web of Science database from 2000 onwards, encompassing 38 studies that use experimental methods in micro-CSR research. These studies were analysed in terms of their experimental designs, theoretical frameworks, and critical findings. The review uncovers a fragmented body of literature characterised by significant variability in experimental designs and theoretical integration. The predominant use of experimental vignette methodology and factorial designs is noted, along with the frequent employment of theoretical frameworks such as social identity theory and signalling theory, which often lack depth in application. Furthermore, challenges related to sample diversity, ethical considerations, and the generalisability of findings are identified. This systematic review of experimental methodologies in micro-CSR research offers a comprehensive synthesis of existing studies and actionable guidelines for future research. Ultimately, this work advances the methodological rigour of micro-CSR studies and bridges the gap between academic research and practical application.
