Summary/Abstract: Among the opponents of totalitarianism in Romania, history has remembered the name of Virgil Gheorghiu (1916-1992). Opposed to communism, he sought refuge in France in 1948, and he built a vast novelistic fresco, now considered a 'classic' of anti-totalitarian literature. But his memoirs also make it possible to grasp the essence of the totalitarian phenomenon, from a perspective different but complementary to his novels, in particular The 25th Hour.
