Summary/Abstract: The article provides a brief theoretical overview of studies on kin names in connection with the work on the project “The Kin Names of Bulgarians – Part of Our People‘s Linguistic Heritage”. The project aims to foster cooperation between the scientific community, Bulgarian language teachers, and students of different ages, by creating conditions for the active involvement of all participants in a joint study of Bulgarian kin names. Although they are unofficial, kin names are still preserved and widely used, serving as valuable evidence of the historical development of the Bulgarian language and culture. The collection of these names is of significant importance in ensuring the preservation of family memory. Engaging students in research activities focused on kin names – through the investigation of their own family histories and naming practices – offers multiple benefits, including raising awareness of the significance of family memory and contributing to the preservation of national identity.
