Summary/Abstract: Seven operas with music by Jozef Elsner appeared on the stages of Lwów (Lviv, Lemberg) and Warsaw as the result of the composer’s close collaboration with Wojciech Bogusławski. Their world premieres took place in a ‘‘liminal period’’ which, after the fall of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, left its imprint on every sphere of life, including spoken drama and opera. These works offer insights into a remarkable confluence of aesthetic tendencies and compositional procedures whose sources can be traced both to European stage genres (opera buffa, opera-comique, Viennese Singspiel, opera seria and semiseria, Italian heroicomic and tragicomic opera) as well as to Polish literary and theatrical culture.
