Summary/Abstract: An important group of works by Szymon Laks – a Polish émigré composer of Jewish origin – consists of texted musical works in which avian literary topoi predominate. The aim of this article is to examine the functioning of birds in the composer’s music and to identify those features of his idiom through which he creates avian images. On the basis of a representation model combining the concepts of Sławomira Żerańska-Kominek and Peter Kivy, characteristic avian motifs may be distinguished. In works that lack illustrative properties, by contrast, birds appear as a metaphor for Polish identity.
