Summary/Abstract: The article revises the entrenched, schematic division in scholarship on the Stanislavian period between ‘‘refined” foreign opera and ‘‘utilitarian” Polish works. It highlights the key role of imported repertoire, particularly opera buffa and opéra-comique, in advancing the Enlightenment’s educational and propagandistic aims within Warsaw’sp ublic theatre. At the same time, it calls for a fuller appreciation of original Polish opera, taking into account its distinctiveness as well as its broader socio-cultural context.
