The rhythm of the machine, the silence of the subject. Technical modernity in the poetry of Ivan Mojík

Summary/Abstract: This study analyses the motifs of the machine and mechanised labour as constitutive elements of the work of the Slovak poet Ivan Mojík (1928–2007). It traces their evolutionary transformations throughout his entire oeuvre and within the context of his shifting poetics. It demonstrates how the technical element is reflected not only in the thematic dimension but also in the structure of the text – in imagery, composition and typography, particularly in the visual poetry of the collections Tekuté oči ([Liquid eyes]1999) and Kričať ([Shout] 2001). The poet moves from futurist enthusiasm through images of civilisational ambivalence to dystopian scenarios. Mechanicality becomes a model of linguistic organisation: series, repetition and chains of variation stage the proceduralisation of the subject and the acceleration of experience. The interpretation is set against critical reflections on technical modernity by Bruno Latour, Herbert Marcuse, Bernard Stiegler and Paul Virilio, which draw attention to the growing tension between the dynamics of the system and the weakening of the individual voice. Mojík does not reject technology, but through artistic means he thematises its contradictory civilisational consequences for human beings and language.
