Summary/Abstract: The Conrad von Heydendorffs were one of the most important Transylvanian Saxon stirps, one who bestowed the town of Medias, Transylvania, the Habsburg Empire and Romania with several high ranked civil servants, scholars and officers of high rank. Numerous of its members have left extended correspondence, while Michael Conrad von Heydendorff sen. (1730-1821) and his son Michael jun. (1768-1857) also kept a diary. Both correspondence and diaries are valuable historical sources. From the beginning of the 18th century until the fourth decennium of the 20th century, the Heydendorffs commissioned their portraits so that a quite considerable gallery came into being. The portraits belong to art styles reaching from Baroque to Biedermeier and academism. The present essay analyses the historic and art historic importance of the gallery in question
