Summary/Abstract: The author diagnoses and analyses the phenomenon of the archival turn that has taken place over the last decade in Polish historical film research. This has resulted in numerous publications based on various types of source materials, predominantly treated as an alternative to traditional textual analyses. The text systematises these practices, highlighting their diversity (critical editions of documents, institutional monographs, meta-reflection on archives). Furthermore, the article outlines the key contexts of this turn: the influence of New Film History and Production Studies, the progressive digitisation of collections, and artistic phenomena in documentary cinema (found footage). In its final section, the article postulates the necessity of taking the next methodological step – transitioning from the digitization of access to the computational turn. It argues that applying digital humanities tools, which treat the archive as a dataset, can lay the foundations for a modern, digital historiography of Polish cinema.
