Summary/Abstract: The article analyses the development of the market of theatrical re-release in Poland after 1989, with particular attention to the changes that have taken place due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Three phases of development are identified here: the pioneering phase, the phase of expansion, and the contemporary phase of specialisation, characterised by a growing number of niche distributors and an increased presence of older films in cinema listings. Contemporary circulation of theatrical re-releases is moving away from the dominance of the established canons of art cinema towards a more diversified offer that also encompasses genre film, cult classics, and nostalgia-driven cinema. An important element of the analysis is the discourses that accompany re-releases – the categories of the classic, the canon, and film heritage, as well as the role of digital image restoration technology. Re-releases are interpreted both as instruments of audiovisual heritage preservation and as a mechanism for activating cultural memory and negotiating the contemporary film canon, which encompasses not only traditional art cinema masterpieces but also nostalgic and genre productions.
