Summary/Abstract: The article focuses on the design for the façade of the Baroque palace of the Radziwiłł family in Nieborów. The design bears the name of Hilary Szpilowski and the date 1784; it is distinguished by its elegant Classicist form. Until now, the presence of the signature had led scholars to believe that Szpilowski was indeed the creator of the design proposal presented in the drawing. However, the results of recently conducted research call this view into question. It is not possible that a novice architect could have produced a significantly better design drawing than those produced by a professional such as Szymon Bogumił Zug, who also worked on designs for Nieborów. Szpilowski worked as a construction assistant for Stanisław Zawadzki, so his professional position points to the true author of the design for the façade: it was Zawadzki, an architect trained at the Academy of St Luke in Rome. By employing his favourite forms, he was able to create a design for a harmonious, cohesive piece of architecture distinguished by its refined decoration, one that testifies to this architect’s extraordinary talent.
