Summary/Abstract: The verbal noun in Slovak is of a hybrid nature – as an indefinite verbal form, it is part of the verbal paradigm but formally corresponds to a noun. Under certain circumstances, however, this grammatical form is subject to conversion (or morphological motivation in the terminology of J. Furdík 2008 and M. Ološtiak 2007), whereby it is reinterpreted as an independent noun. Juraj Furdík, to whom this paper is dedicated, marking what would have been his 90th birthday, evaluated this linguistic unit from a word-formation perspective as the result of derivation. In this paper, we present both derivational and grammatical interpretations of verbal nouns in Slovak, focusing on indicators that signal the transition of verbal nouns into independent nouns and on their treatment in Slovak monolingual dictionaries.
