Summary/Abstract: The article presents the challenges faced by Bulgarian Bar Councils in assessing the conditions for access to the profession of 'lawyer' and the judicial caselaw regarding appeals against refusals for admission and registration of lawyers under Article 7 of the Legal Profession Act. In the author’s opinion access to practicing law as a lawyer in Bulgaria should be based on objective, relevant, and non-discriminatory criteria, and the conditions for such access should be carefully assessed for their compliance with applicable European standards and the Council of Europe Convention for the Protection of the Profession of Lawyer.
