Summary/Abstract: The text reveals a highly veiled yet essential implicit motif in Chekhov’s canonical play The Seagull: its connection with Edgar Allan Poe’s famous poem The Raven. More specifically, it traces how the theme of decadence permeates the entire dialogue and, initially ironized and later questioned and denied, in the final act of the comedy becomes woven into the plot as a concrete incident, achieving an intertextual and hermeneutic allusion to the situation described by Poe. Individual lines spoken by the characters are reinterpreted in a new way, which the author suggests may indeed allude to the work of the American poet; in this sense, the article proposes an alternative perspective on Chekhov’s dramaturgical strategy.
