The Introduction of Tarot in Bulgaria in the 1990s. Artistic Influences and Cultural Transformation

Summary/Abstract: This article explores the cultural process of the introduction and adaptation of Tarot cards in Bulgaria during the 1990s, with an emphasis on their visual, symbolic, and artistic transformation in the context of the post-socialist transition. The study traces the historical development of Tarot from its European origins in the 15th century to its modern use as a tool for psychological reflection and spiritual knowledge. The focus is placed on the work of three Bulgarian artists – Chavdar Gyuzelev, Yassen Gyuzelev, and Atanas Atanassov – whose individual interpretations reflect both global visual traditions and their professional collaborations with Western European publishers. The methodology combines historical-critical and visualsemiotic analysis based on empirical material, artworks, and biographical data. The findings demonstrate that the introduction of Tarot in Bulgaria was not a simple import but a mediated artistic process shaped by international cultural exchange, market dynamics, and personal authorial strategies. The article concludes that Tarot functions as a hybrid visual language capable of adaptation in new cultural and social contexts.
