From Expansive Americanism to Rentier Capitalism (or, from Developmental Modernity to the Return of Rent)

Summary/Abstract: The essay proposes an interpretation of democracy according to its evolution, as theorized by Alexis de Tocqueville, Guglielmo Ferrero and Talcott Parsons. Democracy, as a political regime and form of governance of citizens has evolved over time and has been subject to constant internal and external pressures. The return of President Donald Trump to power in the USA has triggered a wave of conservatism that is distinct from its classical forms. Anyform of social dialogue, of institutional mediation is abandoned in favor of the politics of the strongest and richest.
